BellaOHOT Chapter 10

Alexander’s birthday was the other day, and seeing him as a teenager is just like seeing his father as a teenager. If we put them in the same room, it would be impossible to deny that Mortimer is his father. It may be necessary to finally come clean to the children about their parentage. I’m just not sure how to go about it without making things difficult for Mortimer and Dorothy. Their marriage does not need to placed in jeopardy because of me or my family.

He already has a girlfriend, although, they don’t call it that. “Just friends” only goes so far, and I would know that from experience. I suppose this is something every generation has to learn on their own.

Alexander is an ambitious young man. He strives to do well in school, but he also dreams of getting a job so that he can help out with the family’s expenses. I believe he also wishes to purchase a computer. We don’t own one. When I was a child, our family had three, if you counted my father’s laptop. It seems so strange to me now, having gone without one for so long. Of course, I have no problem if Alexander wants to buy one now.

Shortly after Alexander’s birthday, the girls celebrated theirs, as well. It’s hard to believe that all of my children are getting older.

Their personalities are so different. I mean, they were all along, but now it seems so much more pronounced. Donna is so shy, and only really shows you the fun little girl she can be when she thinks no one is looking.

Bianca, on the other hand, is so outgoing. She was the first one on the bus on their first day, happily chatting to Alex and the bus driver about all the friends she hoped she would make. A few seats away, Donna sat alone and silent.

She loves to paint, much like I used to at her age, and uses Cassandra’s easel to her advantage whenever she can. She’s also shown a real aptitude for chess, as well, which is something the entire family shares.

And of course, her sister – Bianca the butterfly – is the one to bring home friends. She’s always doing that. These days, the house seems so filled with life and laughter, the sounds of which we were sorely missing after Don’s betrayal. I think we are all finally moving onward.

Alexander has taken over the role of ‘man of the house’ – something we have so few of. He does odd chores and isn’t afraid to fix things for himself. I have to admit, however, that I was deathly worried the first time I saw him trying to fix the television. He had manuals and said he would stop if it was too complex for him, and I trust him to be honest, but it still scared me seeing him tinkering about like that.

Whenever I say something, though, he just laughs and says “it’s no trouble, mom, really. How else am I going to learn?”

A lot has been going on with Cassandra, too. She is currently dating Lester Hatfield, a boy she used to go to school with. Boy, I say, but it’s hard to get used to the idea that they aren’t children anymore. Cassandra and Lester are both young adults now, and it’s getting harder to ignore the love blossoming between them.

She recently went on a trip of her own, to Egypt as I did. I wished I could have gone with her, to share with her the wonders of that magical place. But as I understand it, she had fun and met some interesting people while there.

Lately, I have been feeling the years, which sometimes lie heavily on me. I have gray hair now, streaks of silver in my otherwise dark hair, and my bones are beginning to ache. My name means ‘beauty’ but I feel nothing like the ravishing young woman who fell in love with her best friend so many years ago. But I suppose that all good things fade eventually, and youth and beauty are some of those things.

My girls, sweet things that they are, flatter me with kind words.

“Momma, you are always beautiful,” Bianca has said on numerous occasions.

Her sister, however, said it a different way, by painting a beautiful portrait of me to hang on our wall. “It’s not very good,” Donna said when she showed it to me, “but I will do a better one when I get better at painting.”

I, however, think it is the most wonderful painting I have ever seen.

Like the rest of life these days, the twins’ childhood seemed to fly by so quickly, their birthdays rushing forward to overcome us all. I made cake, and we celebrated another quite birthday with just the family.

I was, however, completely unprepared for them to be teenagers and they had to wear clothes from the thrift store for a couple of days, until my paycheck came in and I could afford to buy them anything nice. When it did, I took them on a girls shopping trip, complete with make-overs. Donna had so much fun! So did I, if you want to know the truth.

Cassandra wasted no time in giving “sisterly advice” to her little sisters. Bianca, especially, seemed to be in need of it, as wild as she was. I’m not sure if any of it sunk in, though.

Donna, my bookworm, was less worrysome. She was happiest at home with her nose in a book most of the time.

Still, for all of their differences, Bianca and Donna share a bond that neither Cassie or I can truly understand. As twins, they are their own built in best friends. not just sisters. I have seen them fight. I have seen them lecture and yell and cry. But I have also seen them make up and hug one another tightly.

“I can’t stay mad at Bianca, Mom,” Donna once told me when they were very young. “If I do, I get bad dreams. So I can never let the sun set with us still fighting.”

I guess I can understand that much. Fighting with someone you love hurts like nothing else, save being separated from them entirely.

Simmer’s Notes: I apologize for this in advance, but the time has come to vote for the heiress. I had hoped Bella’s children would have been closer in age so readers could get to know them all, but the twins came so late in life, and if I wait any longer, Cassie will already be an Adult. :-( As it is, she’s only got 11 days left, so if she wins, she will have very little time to get married to get married and have kids. It’s the biggest “strike” against her, sadly.
