There is a doorway between this world and the next and the Angel of Death – the Grim One, the Reaper of Souls – is the keeper of the keys. When a soul has lived out it’s time on this earth, He walks through the door and brings them to the other side.
When someone’s life ends before it’s time is up, however, the balance of Nature is upset. Overturned. Set on it’s ear. Shattered. Ripped. Rent in twain like a broken heart.
My mother was dead.
She wasn’t supposed to die. It wasn’t her time. Death knew this, but he could not undo what had been done no matter how much I plead with him.
She had been killed by the television.
It was hardly fair, but there it was. I suspect that the appliances have been out to get the members of our family for years. We have had a dearth of kitchen fires and faultily wired radios and now the television. It was bound to happen.
As someone who understands the way death works, I am content that the Grim One will see my mother to her rightful place on the other side. I am, however, most put out that my son had to see her slaughter at the hand of the treacherous television set.

“Mom, there’s something I need to tell you…”
Not the thing you want to hear from your daughter, no matter how she says it. My heart clutched in my chest, filled with the sudden worry that my sweet little Fern was in some kind of trouble.

Well, we never did get to go on that family vacation… at least, not while the Gyes and Georg were still children. Things were just moving along too fast, I guess.
The next thing I know, the boys are teenagers and my girls are both young adults. Time sure files!
Fern has decided she wants to become an astronaut and while I can’t help but wonder about her grand ideas, I remember Mom worrying about my pursuit of music, so I can’t let her down, now can I? I suggested that Fern get a job in the military, to prepare her for the hard work involved.

Sometimes Lester says I focus on negative things. I look back on my life, and I guess some that might be true. A good chunk of my life has been spent trying to overcome adversity, and just when things were looking up, I lost both of my parents.
There are, however, plenty of things in my life that make it wonderful. Lester, of course, and our children.
Guys and Georg have grown so much in so little time! Soon, it will be time for their birthday and we are planning a party for them. It will only be family, but I cannot wait!

Lately, it seems as if my dreams have been troubled. Lester’s as well. Perhaps it is because so much has happened. My mother’s death… giving birth to twins, yet again. I don’t know, but I have such strange dreams of late.
And it would seem that Lester and I are not the only ones who have been feeling unsettled. The girls, especially Fern, have strange tales to tell in the morning light, while we are sitting down to breakfast.

I suppose, with my mother, Bella Bachelor, who started life in Sunset Valley as the daughter of Simis and Jocasta Bachelor, sister of Michael & Matthew Bachelor and half-sister to Rene Kennedy.

Alexander was excited to be an uncle. He and Elaine had begun having babies long before and had, in fact, given birth to a handsome little boy, whom they named Galen. By the time Cassandra’s twins were born, Galen was already a toddler and soon to become a child … and Elaine was pregnant again. She was hoping for a girl this time, and they both were looking forward to seeing their new nieces, Elena and Fern.

After the wedding, Lester moved in with us. He brought very little money with him, but that was okay. For a while now, we have been quite okay as a family.
Indeed, I had a bit of a “secret stash” of things as it were. Not money, mind you, but heirlooms and items I’d found on my trips to Egypt and China. Things I wanted more than anything to pass down to my children along with the house. And I had been thinking about these things a lot more recently – maybe it was Dorothy’s death reminding me that neither Mortimer or I were getting any younger and that even if illness never befell either of us, someday the Reaper would come for us as well. It was, after all, the inevitable result of a long life.

As I watched her celebration unfold, I was overwhelmed by a myriad of emotions, some good and some not so good. Some sweet and some very bitter.
